Rob and I came to” Robeanne House ” thirty two years ago ,a stubble field with outline planning for a pig unit and a house. Our first job was to get water and electric to the site then the piggery went up ,we lived in two big caravans with our small children Emma and Bobby . We were very lucky for the three years the weather was mild and quite dry . Apart from the growing pig unit we had quite a menagerie of other animals ducks, chickens, geese, turkeys ,and then one day while visiting my brother and family in Thixendale we went along to Charlie Braders farm to watch them sorting sheep , well to cut a long story short we came home with a lamb aptly named mint sauce . This lamb gave us hours of entertainment and lived with our springer spaniel Polly . And so started my love affair with sheep !!!!
After three years we put in planning for our house ,we started building at the Easter unfortunately the weather changed and became wet and windy ,we soon had a swimming pool in the foundations so Rob decided on another row of blocks just to be on the safe side. I was a dab hand at making cement all very good for the figure all this physical stuff. Lots of help came from family and friends so it soon started to take shape .Our topping out day arrived a big party was organised the BBQ was positioned in the now kitchen !! Fortunately the weather changed and we had a glorious day and lots of fun .We moved in on the 23rd of December it was all a bit rough and ready lots still to do ..but we soon got up the Christmas tree and stuffed the turkey and had a wonderful Christmas day with our great friends Robin and Janet and their girls .
I have been in catering since I was 16 , a natural progression as I was always helping mum cooking and cleaning. The house was never empty the kettle was always boiling and no one had a drink with out something to eat. Usually hot scones fresh out of the oven. I did a catering management course as well a night classes and worked for Crest group and Scottish and Newcastle hotels .When I married Rob a friend ,an other Jeanne and I did outside catering we did lots of weddings and christenings all very jolly but lots of work.
When the house was finished (well nearly) we started doing B@B for walkers walking the Yorkshire Wolds Way ,mum had started doing B@B in South Cave when we all left home for walkers so sent them on to us. So that is how it all began just the one room then two …….. we now have eight rooms at Robeanne house and four at the Shiptonthorpe Arms the old pub we are renovating in the village www.shiptonthorpearms.co.uk
We are in an ideal country location while still being easily accessible for York ,Hull , the beautiful Yorkshire coast and Dales . We are close to Castle Howard , Sledmere House ,The Deep . National cycle route 66 The Yorkshire Wolds way. The market towns of Beverly and Driffield and so much more in this truly beautiful part of Yorkshire.
